Morning, Afternoon, Full Day

Portraiture: Morning – This session offers students an exciting opportunity to learn the fundamentals of building a portrait using graphite. Marian will guide students in the basics of proportional drafting skills and how to manage light and shadow in a portrait. Students will alternate between the use of resource photos and a live model. This session is well-suited for both beginners and more experienced painters. Over the course of the week, students will learn the basic skills for building a portrait.

Note: If you are interested in continuing portraiture work using oils, sign up for the afternoon session as well.
Students may bring their own materials (a list will be provided), but supplies will also be made available on site for those who need them.

Portraiture: Afternoon – This class, suited to more experienced painters, will have students building a portrait using oils. They will practice and hone drafting skills, the management of light, color mixing, elements of style, and the glazing techniques needed to portray 3-D form. Students will alternate between the use of resource photos and a live model. Over the course of the week, students will learn the skills needed to build a portrait recognizable to the model being painted as well as to the other artists in the room.

Note:The full day option provides students with the the fullest experience in building a portrait.

Meet your Instructor

Marian

Marian is a retired academic who took up portrait painting and teaching in 1998. She has worked with current and late members of the Portrait Society of America, as well as a diverse group of working artists in Tennessee. Teaching art and resuming studio art commissions has always been her retirement plan. Marian is a seeker and a scholar who came to Christian Science as a life practice in 2011. Bringing the expression of art to spiritual recognition is her aim for the student and teacher alike.
