Family Camp
If you'd like time with your family in a Christian Science family-loving atmosphere where there are plenty of water and land-based activities for everyone, including daycare for infants, a Little Loon program for pre-schoolers, and daily activities for children in our Bear Cubs and Moose Groups, then you must join us for a week of Family Camp during the second half of August. Each family lives in a cabin along Newfound's waterfront or nestled in the pine trees of Owatonna 's grove. Food is good and plentiful - and there's no prep or clean-up to deal with! Encouraged and coached by an attentive and skilled staff, you can do just about any of the activities we offer during regular camp, even if it's been 20 years or more since you last tried. The Staff will gladly help you regain your slalom stance, your tennis stroke, or your bull's eye shot OR introduce you to a new activity like the zip-line or the climbing wall. Childcare is provided during activity periods for children up to the age of 6 and includes a variety of planned activities - games, stories, music, nature walks, dance, and life-guarded swimming - or a safe place to snooze. Daytrips to hike, canoe, kayak, or see the rugged Maine coastline run throughout the week. Your day might begin with a ½ mile swim to Cherry Island (and back!) or a 2 mile canoe paddle to Harrison for the best cinnamon buns you've ever tasted. Or you can sleep 'til the Camp bell rouses you for our hot buffet breakfast. Like regular camp, Family Camp includes a ½ hour of Quiet Time followed by Morning Meeting where everyone gathers to sing, listen to a section of the Lesson read aloud, share an inspired thought or two, and hear the line-up of special activities for the day. There's a long morning activity period (followed by lunch and rest hour) and a long afternoon activity period (followed by dinner and evening activity). During these periods, campers may do whatever they please - wakeboard, bumper-tube, swim, play tennis, sail, kayak, windsurf, canoe, waterski, try our climbing wall or zip-line, or simply relax on the beach, the deck of our Dining Room, in a glider, or at the gazebo.
Camp is yours to appreciate and enjoy as you wish. Day trips off Camp property include: Rock climbing at Jockey Cap or exploring one of the last Shaker Villages in America , taking a ferry ride to Monhegan Island where art abounds, canoeing on the gentle Saco River or down the white-water rapids of the Androscoggin River , taking an easy hike up Morse Mt. and down the other side to the ocean, an intermediate hike up Baldface Mt. followed by an ice-cold dip in Emerald Pool, or a rigorous hike up Mt. Washington , Mt. Jefferson , or Mt. Katahdin ! Local golf courses are also accessible. And if all else fails (including the weather), we'll hike you over (in a Camp van) to Freeport (on the coast) or North Conway (in N.H.) for some serious outlet shopping! Evening activities are different every day, including Opening Night get-acquainted games, a child-friendly concert, a Wednesday night testimony meeting, Club Night (with small group activities for all ages), and a family talent show following a lakeside lobster feast.
The week culminates with Saturday night's Council Fire. Marked by a traditional visit from the Grand Shaman, this family gathering on our beach around a bonfire is a picture-perfect opportunity to appreciate the quiet beauty of the setting sun and the calling loons as the water gently laps along the shore. Family Camp is packed with activities and friendship, family time and rejuvenating time: it's not to be missed!
